[EstrangeD] Graphics - Why the snake?

"Snakes have always been a favorite of mine in design. To me they mean cunning and intellect, as well as passion and desire. In my designs you'll notice little themes going here and there. Animals are big for symbolism with me. The music I write is fun and entertaining, but when you hear it often you sense your passions wanting to leak out. They make you think, and engage in what's happening both around you, as well as what's moving/changing inside yourself.

I've added the Snake to my Album Art designs to show how with everything in life you have passion and you have desire both vying for a spot. They can be very powerful emotions, and a guiding force for so many through life. When people five years down the road think about 'EstrangeD music', I want these emotions conveyed in whatever is said about the music I play."

A Sense of Real - at Biolife

Here I sit, by myself, in a crowd of maybe twenty poor souls. Meaningless chatter abounds as machines whizz and cylindrical vile's spin, red as ripe cherries. This is a feeding ground, a place where humans are harvested for what they can produce; their innards slowly drained until their time is up. The oddity, however, in this scenario however isn't the amount of human liquids absorbed here daily, or the sheer massive number of beings that come in this door willingly. No, not the bland tan walls or the emotionless off-white ceiling tiles illuminated by a yellowing white accent lighting that happens to be hidden in the recesses of the wall's overhangs (which strangely no one notices, as hideous as it is). Nor is it the peppy music used to disguise the anguish, the pain, the desperation of those individuals who come here on their own accord out of pure survival instinct to increase liquid capital or die from lack of it. The white elephant, not talked about here yet known as the universal truth for all whose hand forced them into such a position is in fact the very same physical entity that drives countries to war, spouses to feud and separate, as well as cause such a rift in American culture that cannot be gapped save by the destruction of this entity. It feeds off the greed, the desperation, and success we all see. What I am describing is nothing less than a green monster whose luster used to be magnificent, and now has lost us in a false reality: $$$.

Sometimes the most revealing of thoughts comes when sitting in the most peculiar of places.

Song: Car Radio

I ponder of something great
My lungs will fill and then deflate
They fill with fire
Exhale desire
I know it's dire
My time today

I have these thoughts
So often I ought
To replace that slot
With what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole
My car radio
And now I just sit in silence

Sometimes quiet is violent
I find it hard to hide it
My pride is no longer inside
It's on my sleeve
My skin will scream
Reminding me of
Who I killed inside my dream
I hate this car that I'm driving
There's no hiding for me
I'm forced to deal with what I feel
There is no distraction to mask what is real
I could pull the steering wheel

I have these thoughts
So often I ought
To replace that slot
With what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole
My car radio
And now I just sit in silence

I ponder of something terrifying
'Cause this time there's no sound to hide behind
I find over the course of our human existence
One thing consists of consistence
And it's that we're all battling fear
Oh dear, I don't know if we know why we're here
Oh my,
Too deep
Please stop thinking
I liked it better when my car had sound

There are things we can do
But from the things that work there are only two
And from the two that we choose to do
Peace will win
And fear will lose
There's faith and there's sleep
We need to pick one please because
Faith is to be awake
And to be awake is for us to think
And for us to think is to be alive
And I will try with every rhyme
To come across like I am dying
To let you know you need to try to think

I have these thoughts
So often I ought
To replace that slot
With what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole
My car radio
And now I just sit in silence

I ponder of something great
My lungs will fill and then deflate
They fill with fire
Exhale desire
I know it's dire
My time today

I have these thoughts
So often I ought
To replace that slot
With what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole
My car radio
And now I just sit in silence

It's 1:54 p.m. on a Monday afternoon. I'm sitting here, trying so hard to study for my first final and I just can't.
So I turn to Facebook, and that in turn leads me to YouTube where I begin listening to this years Bonnaroo lineup. I haven't heard much of 21 Pilots before, so I turn on some of their songs and immediately studying gets harder. I'm entranced by what I see and hear. Stuck in this moment I begin to think. Everything floods in: fears of my future, smaller current job issues, and thoughts about my relationships. I CAN'T STOP. "Car Radio" starts to play.

Then I begin to remember, remember who I was, where I came from not so many years ago. I see the crowd on my worn computer screen engaging and reacting. The music fills my thoughts, the words catch, and I find myself resonating with one stanza being sung: "I have these thoughts, So often I ought, To replace that slot, With what I once bought, 'Cause somebody stole, My car radio, And now I just sit in silence."

And now I just sit in silence.

Surrounded by people I can feel the tears welling up. I've lost so much of who I once was, so quickly it feels as if life has stolen me away. I'm replaced by this shell of me, this outward copy of who I once was. But inside this shell is trapped a man who's uncertain of his future. He doesn't understand many of the events that have come to pass and he's still angry at those things he can't change. He thinks constantly, pushes worry to the far reaches of his brain and attempts not to dwell on it for he knows what cancer thought can be in too large a quantity. For now he sits, turns a page, and continues reading on.

For now he just sits in silence.

Fun. "Some Night's Intro" followed by "Some Night's"

Watching both videos together really gives you atmosphere surrounding this song. I haven't seen such honesty in a song in a long time. Their lyrics speak of losing purpose, not knowing what they stand for. I know many people feel this way from time to time, I've been there so many times and in some ways am there now. Seeing artists write music this real gives me hope, knowing I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Catch fire and never give up, roll with the punches and overcome. Make your own destiny friends.

Peace, love and respect.

Taylor Zank - Keeping it real.

I've met a lot of musician's over the years all with so much great talent. This is a shout out to a friend of mine whom I came to know this year at Ohio Northern. His name is Taylor Zank. He writes, records, and does his bit to better society through lyrical composition. The best way to set this up is to let you hear it for yourself, so I'll keep it short and let you listen for yourself!

Sound Check, Please!

4/3/2012

Touring has taught me a few things. The first of which is that sound checks are necessary wherever you go, even with a bare bone setup. Just because you've decided to do a show with two acoustic guitars, two vocals and a shaker doesn't mean you shouldn't take time to set all the volumes to where they should be. Believe me when I say the crowd will love your music even if you start five minutes later from doing a sound check.

Another element to live sound that needs checked is monitor volume levels. Unfortunately for the United States the past few years have been riddled with celebrity musicians messing up our national anthem on live television. The most recent of these incidents happened today when The Fray sang an acoustic version at the NCAA Final Four game in New Orleans. After watching this my initial thought was that someone just didn't know what they were playing and ill-preparedness caused a horrid performance. However, after reviewing the video two more times I realized something. What didn't sound right in the third chord every time that was played was indeed the lead guitar, which was odd because he sounded fine in the intro. That's when it struck me to watch his fingering for the beginning when it sounded right and then watch them for the rest of the song. The very second the rhythm guitar comes in he appears almost unable to hear himself, and begins playing that last set of notes one half step above where they should be played. Yes, the entire song could have been fixed if he moved his last fingering down one fret every time he played it.

My conclusion here: A bad sound check. It's no secret that many LIVE performances at festivals, football games, and other such appearances where bands may only have a limited time to play get a rushed job at sound setup. I honestly believe if the lead guitarist in this case was able to hear himself well that he would NOT have kept playing wrong notes every single time it came to that third chord, but would have realized it was him and fixed it. After all, he was only a half step away from the right ones!!!

I've experienced this rushed sound job firsthand too many times and learned some tricks to getting around it. First, always be sure you can hear yourself. You don't know if you're playing the wrong notes if you can't hear what you are playing. It sounds selfish but as a musician you are in charge of your instrument. Don't feel bad asking the sound engineer to turn you up just a little bit more so you hear clearly what you are playing. Yes they'll make a joke about guitarists always needing to hear themselves too loud, but better that than not at all.

Next, be sure you can hear the other key elements of the group well too. If you're a rock band then you probably need a good strong kick drum, hi-hat, and snare in your monitor as well as solid bass and vocals. Make sure your guitar bleeds through these enough you're the prominent instrument in your monitor mix though if you can.

So steps one and two take care of you and others. But what if you only have one monitor mix? Position your amp, halfstack, or whatever kind of amplified speakers you have in such a way that you can hear it onstage where you are standing. Then ask the sound engineer to give you a mix similar to how the main speakers sound. You'll all be able to hear one another but still hear yourself when you need to.

Lastly, and certainly not least, on the fly mixing. Many festivals and competitions have the stage area backlined, this means amps are set in front of amps with the first bands setup in front and each following band setup behind the previous one to perform. A band will play and take their gear, leaving the next one's gear in position and ready to play. This is typical of large festivals with large acts playing. Another trick sound engineers use is for one band to setup while another is tearing down and then mix on the fly. Whether you're backlined or asked to setup right before you play, you will at some point face the dilemma of not being sound checked and having to play. Two tricks here. When the sound guy asks if you're ready to begin, you play your instrument or sing into your mic one at a time quickly to determine if he has you in the monitors or not. If you sound decently loud enough then go with it and he will mix you well while you play. Secondly if you need something while you're performing to be turned up or down in your monitor let the sound guy know! Get his attention in a not so obvious way (eye contact followed by pointing at what needs changing). He will then motion for you to say what you want.  Here's what you do. If you're guitar is too quiet in your monitor, simply point at the guitar, point at the monitor, and then point up. He will know what you mean. Then give him a nod or another sign when it's loud enough.

All of this is to help you, the musician, and everyone coming to your show. Always sound check if possible! Always be sure you're loud enough in your mix so that what happened to the Fray doesn't happen to you! And most importantly, practice. Practicing makes playing second nature and reduces careless mistakes onstage. It wont actually make you perfect, however, the crowd may think otherwise. Thanks again, hope this helps!

To quote AC/DC, "We roll tonight, till the guitar bite... For those about to rock, we salute you." Rock on friends, and never stop.
